A Powerful China Won’t Respect India
As India’s Himalayan border standoff with China enters its third month, one
thing has become glaringly obvious: Beijing has no intention of treating New
Delhi as an equal.

Belligerent official statements and bellicose articles in Chinese state-run
media suggest that, in “Game of Thrones” parlance, President Xi Jinping
expects Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “bend the knee.”
中國官媒和中國官方的言論都在暗示一個事情，在“中印的權力遊戲”中，中國國家主席
習近平想要印度總理莫迪（Narendra Modi）“屈膝下跪”。
At one level, Chinese disdain is understandable. Economic growth has powered
China’s rise to the head table of global affairs, and by that yardstick
India is simply not comparable.

In 1970, India’s economy was slightly larger than China’s. Today the World
Bank estimates that China’s $9.5 trillion economy is nearly four times
larger than India’s.

比印度的經濟規模增長了近四倍。
In terms of per capita income, the two countries were neck-and-neck as
recently as 1983. Now, with a per capita income of about $6,900, the average
Chinese earns more than three and a half times more than the average Indian.
1983年中印的人均增長不相上下。現在中國人平均收入則是印度平均水平的3倍以上。
For India, the deeper lesson of the Doklam crisis ought to be clear. A
Western-led order in Asia may not be perfect, but a Chinese-led order will
diminish, not enhance, the standing that India seeks.
中印對峙給印度的教訓就是，在西方領導下的亞洲也許並不完美，但中國領導下的世界
秩序只會不斷削弱（而非加強）印度想要達到的地位。
