When Blake Griffin entered the NBA in 2009, the thought of franchises having spo
rts psychologists wasn't really a thought, as the league officially mandated tha
t all 30 teams hire at least one licensed mental health professional in 2019.
However, before the official 2019 rule, some teams began exploring the idea of h
aving a psychologist or a behavioral therapist on their staff. One of those team
s was the Los Angeles Clippers, as the team frequently struggled with chemistry
and dealt with severe off-court trauma in 2014 due to Donald Sterling's racial r
emarks.
Donald
Sterling
While having a licensed professional is a very positive thing, as athletes carry
heavy baggage due to constant pressure, fame, and temptations, some teams could
use their influence for evil to uncover the darkest sides of their players, as
happened with Griffin.
During the very beginning of the Clippers' new team strategy, it's safe to say t
hat Blake's new, profound experience didn't go well.
"The Clippers hired a sports psychologist that everyone was required to meet wit
h," Blake said. "We talked, and when he left, I went to take a shower, and when
I got out, I seen I had a voicemail. It was the psychologist, and he said, 'Hey,
coach, just left Blake's house, great talk, and we discussed some interesting t
hings.' I was like, 'Oh my God. I'm never meeting another sports psychologist ag
ain.'"
A major flaw was exposed in Griffin's case
Griffin
As previously stated, teams are the ones that hire clinicians, which can be detr
imental to the players, as some psychologists could view the front office, the g
eneral manager, or coaches as their primary client, which was very much Blake's
experience.
Blake
They feel that leaking the athletes' personal issues, mental state, or frustrati
ons can help the team make further decisions, which isn't the primary goal of ha
ving a therapist in the first place. For that reason, many view those psychologi
sts as team spies, disguised as the management's "right-hand man."
Due to the mixed opinions, most athletes hire their own private mental health cl
inicians who only answer to them, or do the bare minimum of attending the sessio
ns and holding back on their answers to satisfy the franchise's or the NBA's rul
es.
As with any other problem, athletes must be aware of this issue, adding another
burden to their already overstimulating lives.
